A Guide to Fashion Designing – Motivation before you start

I should have done this as my first Fashion Designing post, but it’s better late than never.

I’ve had a lot of people commend me on my drawing, saying how good it is and how they can’t draw like that. Let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time, I could draw, and that was during my childhood. I stopped drawing for a period of about 6 years and it was like I couldn’t draw to save my life. I left drawing for so long and drawing left me.

I remember trying to make an agreement with my friend to draw for me, while I design, however that would work. I didn’t think I could draw again…I tried but it seemed too hard.
Fast forward to June last year, I began to train myself again. I knew I possessed some artistic talent, so I pushed forward, and it didn’t take long, I started drawing what you see now. I still work on my drawing because I have a goal in mind.
When people say they can’t draw, I ask them, howbeit in my mind sometimes, “have you tried, and tried, and tried, and sought for other ways and you didn’t find?”
I believe that if you have a dream, and you’re sure that is what you want to do, you work till you get there. If you want to design, and you believe that’s your calling, work till you get there.  Sit down; check pinterest and other platforms on how to draw. Start from the basics and graduate to the complex. Try, and if you fail, try again.

Now, I do recognize that there are some of us that indeed do not possess artistic talent. I’m bringing inspiration on other ways to illustrate your designs, without so much hassle about drawing.
In fashion designing, what is important is that your illustration should be understandable, even though not very realistic (appearing like the real thing). I took it upon myself to search for Instagram pages of designers who don’t draw as perfectly as you see some do, but they are still designers.
I hope the pictures below would give you an idea of other ways you can illustrate.

Also, there are design apps that provide the mannequin and all you do is choose from the variety of styles, materials, prints, and create something akin to what you have in mind. Try searching fashion designer games/apps on your play store.

I remember teaching you people an easy way to draw female designs using a triangle and oval after the DIY here. it’s the same method I used for the illustration below.

There is this template that can be useful for those without much artistic talent. It’s just lines and can be used for shirts, trousers, gowns, basically everything. Just trace the outline of what you want.

In all of these, still make attempts to acquire artistic skills. it is believed to be an advantage for every aspiring designer. Some may say they do not have the natural talent for such, but there’s a quote I heard a long time ago, and it has been with me ever since:

“Hardwork beats talent when talent fails to work hard”

If you believe you will, you will, and even if you don’t, there are other ways you can adapt like what I’ve shared above. Everyone deserves to live their dreams.
Till next time.
